Fighting Fall Allergies – Chicago Suburbs

Posted on August 20th, 2022 by Bill Stuhr

Fall is a beautiful time of year in northern Illinois. The leaves change into an assortment of gorgeous colors. The sun doesn’t beat down quite as hard and there is a nice, cool breeze in the air. Then something comes along and ruins it all: allergy season.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reported that in 2018, approximately 24 million people in the U.S. were diagnosed with seasonal allergies. That’s a lot of itchy eyes and runny noses! Here are some tips on how to decrease your fall allergy symptoms.

Pollen particles are visible in the sun’s rays as they float through the air.

Fight Fall Allergies

  • Close Your Windows

Open windows allow pollen into your home which can add to your suffering. If you’d like to briefly open these windows this fall, it’s important to check the pollen count in your area first. Otherwise, keeping your windows closed will keep your sinuses clear and help your heating and air conditioning system run more efficiently.

  • Regularly Wash Your Hands & Face

Autumn is a great time to spend outdoors, however, the allergens travel right back into your home when you do. If you spend any time outdoors, be sure to immediately wash your hands and face to remove lingering pollen.

  • Change Your Clothes

Pollen isn’t picky. It will settle on your skin and your clothes. Be sure to change clothes after coming inside to reduce allergy symptoms caused by persistent pollen.

  • Delegate Outside Chores

Trade chores with a family member or hire a kid from the neighborhood to mow your lawn. If you have to do it yourself, wear a face mask to prevent pollen from making contact.
